Three journalists were assaulted in the Effutu Constituency. The attackers are believed to be supporters of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). This incident followed the rejection of President John Dramani Mahama’s nominee for Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Abraham Henry Arthur.
The assault happened after Assembly Members voted on the nominee. Only 9 out of 26 members supported him, falling short of the required two-thirds majority.
Eric Owusu Amponsah from Bryt FM, Kwaku Mireku Nyampong from Obaatanpa Radio and Kessben TV, along with other media personnel, were attacked while leaving. During the assault, their mobile phones and a digital watch were stolen.
The victims reported that their attackers seemed angry about their factual reporting. “We only reported the results of the ballot,” one journalist said. “It’s disturbing that we were attacked just for doing our job.”
A complaint has been filed with the Winneba Police Command. An investigation is currently underway. The journalists are demanding immediate arrests and better protection for media workers.
The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) and other media rights groups condemned the attack. They urged authorities to act quickly to protect press freedom and hold those responsible accountable.
