Mohammed Adams Sukparu, the MP for Sissala West, has made accusations against Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. He claims Bawumia was dishonest about his failed visit to Chairman Wontumi. Wontumi is the detained Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman.
Bawumia expressed disappointment after not meeting Wontumi at the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB). He said there was an earlier arrangement with EOCO officials. On May 30, Bawumia and Deputy Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin entered the facility but could not meet Wontumi.
Afterward, Bawumia told the media he was disappointed by this failure. His comments drew criticism from some who felt it was politically motivated.
On Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on June 3, Sukparu responded to Bawumia's statements. He alleged that Bawumia knew why the visit did not happen but misled the public for sympathy.
Sukparu explained that lawyers and EOCO had arranged to bring Wontumi to NIB. However, due to crowd chaos, they decided against exposing him publicly. Sukparu stated that Bawumia was informed of this decision yet still claimed disappointment.
He emphasized that such sensitive matters should not be politicized. According to Sukparu, they turned a serious situation into a chance to promote their presidential ambitions.
In other news, Wontumi’s legal team withdrew a motion on June 2 regarding his bail conditions. This motion sought a review of his GH¢50 million bail set on May 28. It was originally scheduled for hearing on June 3 but was withdrawn a day earlier.
Wontumi's lawyers confirmed that all bail conditions were met by May 30. Despite fulfilling these requirements, his release faced delays due to the pending motion filed without his consent. Ultimately, after extensive legal efforts, Wontumi was released from detention on June 2.
