Former Member of Parliament for Madina, Alhaji Amadu Sorogho, has raised concerns about security personnel's approach during the attempted arrest of Bernard Antwi Boasiako. Boasiako is also known as Chairman Wontumi and is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
In an interview with Channel One TV, Sorogho questioned the need for heavily armed officers at Wontumi’s home. He noted that a warrant was reportedly obtained for the arrest.
“Wontumi was invited but refused to come,” he said. “I do not support so many armed men pursuing one person. The state should not overpower individuals.”
Sorogho suggested there are better ways to handle such situations. He mentioned that if someone does not respond to an invitation, legal action can be taken. He appreciated that they had a warrant but criticized their method.
He emphasized that the state should use its authority with restraint. Force must be proportional and respect individual dignity, especially in politically charged situations.
His comments follow public outcry over law enforcement's attempted raid on Wontumi’s residence on May 23. This operation, backed by a court warrant, has drawn mixed reactions and accusations of political intimidation.
Chairman Wontumi reacted angrily on Akoma FM. He claimed the raid was part of a political witch-hunt by President John Dramani Mahama's administration.
“Am I no longer a Ghanaian?” he asked, expressing frustration over his treatment since Mahama became President.
Wontumi alleged attempts were being made to harm his businesses and limit his freedom. He stated he has never held a government position to justify such actions against him.
“Ghanaians, rise! All NPP supporters should stand up,” he urged passionately. “It is because of you that Mahama treats me this way.”
While details about the warrant remain unclear, Sorogho’s perspective adds depth to the discussion. He defended the state's legal right to act but criticized what he saw as unnecessary force.
