Wontumi Released from EOCO Custody After Meeting Bail Conditions

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, has been released from EOCO custody.

His release followed his legal team withdrawing a motion about his GH¢50 million bail conditions. This motion was filed at the High Court in Accra on May 30, 2025. It was set for hearing on June 3 but was withdrawn on June 2.

Chairman Wontumi received bail on May 28 with two sureties. His lawyer and MP Andy Appiah-Kubi confirmed that these were fulfilled by May 30. However, his release was delayed due to the pending court motion, which his team claims he did not consent to.

NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong confirmed Wontumi's release to journalists outside EOCO headquarters on Monday evening. He stated, “I can confirm that Chairman Wontumi has been released; he’s gone home to relax.” He also thanked Bryan Acheampong, MP for Abetifi, for his support.

Wontumi’s detention caused significant political unrest. On May 29, Minority Members of Parliament staged a walkout and protested outside EOCO for his immediate release. They argued that his public status meant he should have received bail on self-recognition.

The protest extended beyond Parliament as NPP supporters blocked roads near EOCO offices. This caused traffic disruptions in a show of solidarity for Wontumi.
