Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He has accused security forces of intimidation and unlawful behavior. This follows a search at his home by police and National Security operatives.
On Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen show, Mr. Antwi Boasiako described the incident. It began with a struggle that lasted about 30 minutes. During this time, five vehicles arrived at his residence.
He claims the security personnel tried to conduct their operation without a warrant. This led him to confront them about their actions. “So, why this intimidation?” he asked.
He expressed confusion over what he sees as unfair treatment. He stated that during the NPP administration, he held no significant positions. “What have I done to deserve such treatment?” he questioned.
After calling for help from colleagues and authorities, the security personnel left but returned later. This time they brought around one hundred military and police officers with them. Armed with rifles and tools, they allegedly tried to break down his door.
Mr. Antwi Boasiako is worried about the implications for democracy in Ghana. He warned that if things continue this way, it could lead to a military coup.
“If the President allows such lawlessness,” he said, “it threatens democracy.” He emphasized that those in power must understand its limits.
He also mentioned a helicopter was ready on the tarmac for his immediate transport after an arrest attempt. He urged President Mahama to control his officials regarding these actions.
Mr. Antwi Boasiako claimed all his bank accounts are frozen now. This includes accounts linked to Akonta Mining and other businesses he owns.
Addressing concerns about his business interests, he noted he hasn’t visited his mining concession in seven years. Instead, he has allowed others to cultivate coconut trees there.
To date, around 18,000 coconut trees have been planted on his land. There are plans for an additional 32,000 trees soon.
He insisted that he has never entered the Samreboi forestry concession area either.
Additionally, Mr. Antwi Boasiako revealed that he has started legal action against Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources.
He claims to have legitimate documentation for his concessions similar to major firms like AngloGold and Newmont but is still barred from operating them.
