Wontumi detention: Police deploy additional officers to EOCO HQ amid security beef-up

There is a heavy police presence at the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra. Security has been significantly increased.

The reason for this sudden move is unclear.

Many police officers have been deployed to the area. More officers are arriving in batches to secure the premises.

DCOP Duuti Tuaruka, the Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, was briefly present. He assessed the situation and interacted with personnel on site.

Speculation suggests that this heightened security may relate to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia's visit. He is scheduled to arrive at EOCO at 3:00 PM. However, authorities have not confirmed this information.

This development follows a protest by the Minority caucus and NPP supporters on Thursday. They demanded a review of bail conditions for Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi.

Wontumi has been in custody for over 48 hours. NPP members call his GH₵50 million bail "excessive and unfair." The protesters vowed to stay at EOCO until his release but dispersed after three hours.

As tensions remain high, questions arise about potential further demonstrations. The heavy police deployment may indicate broader security measures.

JoyNews will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates.

Meanwhile, Frank Annoh Dompreh, Minority Chief Whip and MP for Nsawam-Adoagyire, claims Wontumi is on a hunger strike. He describes this as a desperate measure against “shocking” treatment by EOCO officials.
