Wontumi hospitalised, responding to treatment – Lawyer confirms

The lawyer for Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, has confirmed his medical care. Wontumi is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He was recently arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

Lawyer Andy Appiah-Kubi spoke on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem. He stated that Wontumi had been unwell before his detention. “He has had the flu since last week,” Appiah-Kubi said. They requested a postponement of his CID interrogation due to his illness.

Wontumi is still not fully recovered and is currently hospitalized. Later that evening, Appiah-Kubi confirmed he had been officially admitted to the hospital.

There was confusion about Wontumi’s condition and whereabouts earlier on Wednesday. Paul Yandoh, the NPP’s Ashanti Regional Communications Director, said they had no formal updates on him. He also expressed concern that Wontumi missed his prescribed medication during detention.

Appiah-Kubi confirmed arrangements with EOCO for Wontumi's medical attention while investigations continue.

Chairman Wontumi was arrested by EOCO on Tuesday after leaving CID headquarters in Accra. He had been questioned over undisclosed matters there. Sources suggest the investigation may involve alleged financial dealings with Ghana Export-Import (EXIM) Bank, but EOCO has not made an official statement yet.
