Deputy Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has criticized EOCO. He claims they treated Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, cruelly after his arrest.
During a protest led by the Minority at EOCO’s office, Afenyo-Markin expressed concern for Wontumi's health. He believes authorities are ignoring his condition in a campaign of persecution.
“The man is sick. He’s at the sick bay,” he said. “They want him to die, then they mourn him.” Afenyo-Markin condemned how the agency is handling Wontumi's situation.
He emphasized that due process is important but must respect human dignity. “I’m not saying don’t follow due process if Wontumi did anything,” he stated. “Don’t harass him. Don’t persecute him.”
Afenyo-Markin suggested there might be regional bias in Wontumi’s treatment. He argued that if Wontumi were from another region or under a different political party, the response would differ.
“If it were MPP in power and a chairman was arrested, we’d hear what NDC would say,” he claimed.
He also appealed to President John Mahama to control overzealous officials in his administration.
“It’s my humble appeal to President Mahama,” he said. “Call those hawks to order.” He urged Mahama to establish a new code of conduct for humane treatment during investigations.
