Wontumi’s lawyers meet bail conditions

The legal team for Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, has met bail conditions set by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). However, a pending court motion is delaying his release.

On Friday, May 30, lead counsel Andy Appiah-Kubi spoke to journalists. He assured supporters that Chairman Wontumi was healthy while in custody. “He is good, he is healthy, and there is nothing to worry about,” Appiah-Kubi said.

Wontumi was granted bail on Wednesday, May 28. The bail amount was GHS 50 million with two sureties. Appiah-Kubi confirmed that they have provided the required sureties.

He expressed gratitude to Abetifi MP Bryan Acheampong for his help. Acheampong provided necessary documents that exceeded the bail value.

Despite meeting the bail conditions, a legal hurdle arose. Appiah-Kubi revealed an unknown court motion had been filed. This motion prevents them from securing Wontumi’s release.

The motion was filed by Marfo & Associates at the High Court in Accra. It seeks a review of the bail conditions set by EOCO. The details of this motion are not yet public but may delay Wontumi’s release further.

Chairman Wontumi was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on Tuesday, May 27. He was later taken by EOCO for further investigation into alleged financial misconduct.

This case has attracted significant political interest. Notable NPP figures have visited him at the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB). As of Friday evening, heavy security remained around the NIB premises as supporters gathered in solidarity during ongoing legal proceedings.
