The lawyer for Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, has confirmed his medical care. He is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Lawyer Andy Appiah-Kubi spoke on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem. He said Wontumi was unwell before his arrest by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
Wontumi had flu symptoms since last week and was receiving treatment. This is why they requested a postponement of his CID interrogation. Appiah-Kubi stated that he is still not fully recovered and is currently hospitalized.
Later that evening, the lawyer confirmed that Wontumi had been officially admitted to the hospital. There has been confusion about his condition and whereabouts.
Earlier on Wednesday, Paul Yandoh, the NPP’s Ashanti Regional Communications Director, spoke out. He said the party had not received updates on Wontumi's status or location. Yandoh expressed concern that Wontumi missed his prescribed medication during detention.
Appiah-Kubi has now confirmed arrangements with EOCO for Wontumi's medical attention while investigations continue.
Chairman Wontumi was arrested by EOCO on Tuesday after leaving CID headquarters in Accra. He had been questioned over undisclosed matters.
Sources suggest the EOCO probe may involve alleged financial dealings with Ghana Export-Import (EXIM) Bank. However, EOCO has not yet issued an official statement regarding this matter.
