Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He will spend a second night in custody at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). This follows his failure to meet bail conditions for release.
Wontumi is under investigation for alleged financial transactions with the Ghana Export-Import (EXIM) Bank. He was granted bail on May 28, 2025, set at GH₵50 million with two sureties. However, by Wednesday evening, his legal team had not met all required conditions.
His lead counsel, Andy Appiah-Kubi, spoke to Citi News. He expressed optimism that they would fulfill the bail requirements soon. "We are confident that by Thursday, May 29, all necessary requirements will be fulfilled," he stated.
Wontumi was detained after a lengthy interrogation at EOCO’s headquarters on May 27. During this time, he reportedly fell ill and was briefly hospitalized. His arrest has led to protests from NPP supporters and party figures.
Among those protesting were NPP National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye and former Greater Accra Regional Minister Titus Glover. The tense situation prompted military personnel to be deployed for security at EOCO's premises.
To expedite the bail process, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong has offered to be one of Wontumi's sureties. This move was confirmed by NPP’s Tema West Chairman Kwesi Opoku.
