You promised a state of emergency, now it’s silence – Afenyo-Markin jabs NDC

The Minority in Parliament has criticized the government. They call it a betrayal of promises to address illegal mining, known as galamsey.

At a press conference on May 8, 2025, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin spoke out. He accused the NDC administration of abandoning its pledge to impose a state of emergency against illegal mining.

Afenyo-Markin stated, “The government’s inaction is disappointing and a betrayal.” He noted that while in opposition, the NDC promised urgent action if elected.

He pointed out that 120 days into their term, there is still no state of emergency. The government has shown no urgency on this critical issue.

“Illegal mining devastates our rivers and poisons our lands,” he said. He expressed concern for communities affected by this crisis. The promised state of emergency has disappeared, replaced by silence and inaction.

Meanwhile, the sector minister expresses sorrow on national television about environmental damage. This includes the poor condition of rivers, forests, and farmlands.

The Minority's comments come amid growing public concern over environmental destruction from illegal mining. This includes pollution of water bodies and degradation of forest reserves.
