You should know better – Ahiafor chides MP Assafuah over Addison raid question

A tense moment occurred in Parliament. First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor rebuked Old Tafo MP Vincent Ekow Assafuah. He criticized Assafuah for his “unbecoming” questions about a raid on former Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Ernest Addison's home.

Assafuah asked Interior Minister Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka about the search warrant used during the March 19 raid. He wanted to know if it covered personal spaces and items like pockets and fridges.

“Honourable Minister, can you clarify the scope of the search warrant?” he asked. He insisted his question was for educational purposes.

Ahiafor, presiding over the session, was not impressed. He pointedly criticized Assafuah, who is a lawyer, for lacking legal insight.

“If this question came from a non-lawyer, I would understand,” he said. “But you have seen a search warrant before. Does it specify searching pockets or fridges? Please.”

Ahiafor’s tone showed disappointment rather than just disagreement. He expected lawmakers with legal backgrounds to understand basic judicial instruments like search warrants.

Despite this criticism, Assafuah defended his question. He stated he wanted clarity on the terms of the warrant obtained by National Security.

“Mr. Speaker, I think this is all fair… It’s a direct question,” he responded.

This exchange happened amid public scrutiny over the forceful search of Dr. Addison’s residence. Armed men, some masked and led by Richard Jakpa from National Security Secretariat, conducted the operation.

They allegedly disabled security cameras and demanded access to private vaults, raising concerns about legality and excess.
