The Lagos State Government has signed a new Waste Management Agreement. This agreement is with Zoomlion Nigeria Limited, part of Ghana's Jospong Group of Companies.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong formalized the partnership at the State House in Ikeja. The goal is to improve waste management in Lagos State.
The collaboration will develop two key facilities: a material recovery plant and a waste recycling plant. These facilities will help modernize waste management in Lagos, which generates about 13,000 tonnes of waste daily.
Key parts of the agreement include building Transfer Loading Stations (TLS) at two dumpsites. One TLS will be at Olusosun Dumpsite in Ketu, and another at Solous III Dumpsite in Igando.
The Olusosun TLS will divert 2,500 tonnes of waste daily to a new Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Ikorodu. The Solous III TLS will divert 1,500 tonnes daily to an MRF in Badagry.
Self-tipping tricycles will also be used for better waste collection in hard-to-reach areas. All projects are expected to finish within 18 months.
Governor Sanwo-Olu called the agreement a "turning point" for waste management. He noted it would create over 5,000 jobs and improve operations for private sector waste operators.
He stated that this partnership would transform how Lagos manages and recycles waste. It aims to turn waste into resources rather than burdens.
Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, called the project a major milestone towards a circular economy. He emphasized that wealth can now be generated from discarded materials.
Dr. Agyepong from Jospong Group stressed the importance of African partnerships for sustainable development. He promised that Zoomlion Nigeria Ltd., would meet all terms of the agreement on time.
This partnership is set to redefine waste management in Lagos by turning waste into valuable resources.
