The Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Emmanuel Teye-Cudjoe, is determined to find the military personnel who allegedly shot civilians in Nyinahin.
This clash resulted in one civilian's death and three injuries. It has caused outrage and a strong response from the police.
During his visit to Nyinahin, DCOP Teye-Cudjoe called the incident a crime. He promised to bring the involved military personnel to justice.
The deadly confrontation occurred between soldiers and mourners. This has raised concerns about the use of force by uniformed officers.
DCOP Teye-Cudjoe emphasized that one soldier's actions should not reflect on the entire Ghana Armed Forces. He assured the public that police are working impartially to identify those responsible.
“We will do everything possible to bring the perpetrators to justice,” he stated. He added that they would collaborate with the military for this purpose.
He stressed that only one individual committed this act and they will find him. “We want to assure Nyinahin residents that we will ensure justice,” he said.
Some victims have shared their experiences with JoyNews correspondent Nana Boakye Yiadom. One victim mentioned being injured on his hands and spending all his money on treatment.
He requested help from the government or police so he can return to work.
The Chief of Nyinahin, Nana Amapene Boateng Twum II, expressed concern over the incident. He noted that military actions have instilled fear in the community.
“We urge police to investigate this issue thoroughly,” he said. “The culprit must be punished; no one is above the law.”
Even if provoked, shooting someone is unacceptable, he added. The chief pleaded for a serious investigation into this case.
Meanwhile, Seth Osei Akoto, MP for Atwima Mponua constituency, reassured residents about justice being served.
He urged everyone in Nyinahin to remain calm after this incident.
“I promise alongside the chief and regional commander to follow up on this matter,” he said. “We will ensure justice is served.”
