After nearly seven years of trial, a jury reached a verdict. On May 14, they found Francis Nabegmado guilty of murder. This case involved the killing of Rev. Dr. David Nabegmado in 2018.
Francis, a relative of the victim, stabbed the pastor on December 30, 2018. He claimed that Rev. Nabegmado was a false preacher involved in idol worship and human sacrifices.
The judge, Mary Maame Ekue Yanzuh, summarized the case for an hour. The jury then briefly deliberated before returning with a unanimous guilty verdict.
Based on this verdict, the judge sentenced Francis to life imprisonment. He is now 38 years old and will serve his sentence at Nsawam medium security prison.
When asked for comments on the verdict, Francis expressed a desire to see his family. He said, "My Lady, I want to see my family."
The judge informed him she could not grant that request. Francis insisted again, saying forcefully, "I insist."
Throughout the trial, he claimed insanity drove him to attack his uncle. However, this defense did not prevent his life sentence.
Rev. Emmanuel Kwesi Ofori spoke after sentencing on behalf of the church. He noted that they have been seeking closure for seven years and will issue an official statement soon.
