Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has arrested five people in the Ashanti South Region. This was done in collaboration with the Kumasi Central Police Service. The arrests were made for illegal water connections.
The arrests occurred on Wednesday in several areas of Kumasi. These areas included Danyame, Dakodwom, Kwadaso Estate, and Santasi Apire.
Officials stated that the suspects were arrested for unpaid surcharges. The total amount owed was Gh₵31,803.97 due to their illegal connections.
Of the five suspects, three have paid a total of Gh₵11,515.00. The other two remain in police custody and may face further action if they do not pay.
GWL has raised concerns about illegal water tapping in the Ashanti Region. This issue contributes significantly to Non-Revenue Water (NRW). NRW refers to water produced but not accounted for due to theft or leaks.
Madam Innocentia Kuupiel is the Acting Regional Chief Manager at GWL. She praised law enforcement for their support during these arrests. She emphasized the need for ongoing partnerships to deter such activities.
She encouraged community members to help eliminate illegal water connections. GWL aims to provide good service and meet customer demands.
“Illegal connections deny us resources needed for operations,” she said. GWL remains committed to working with law enforcement against illegal water connections across the Ashanti Region.
