A 54-year-old farmer, Abdul-Rahman Mohammed, was shot and killed. This incident occurred in the Gbagbagbunto community, near Busunu in the Savannah Region.
The West Gonja Municipal police confirmed the shooting. ASP Charles Aninagyei reported that they found three gunshot wounds on the victim's stomach and abdomen. They took him to St Anne Catholic Hospital, where Dr. Haruna confirmed his death. The body is still at the hospital for an autopsy.
Dari Osman Thomas, the Assembly Member for Busunu, spoke about the incident. He said Mohammed was shot after he identified the suspects. A caretaker had called him about suspected cattle rustlers shooting at them.
Mohammed went with his brother on a motorbike to check things out. They found two bulls' meat cut up for transport. When they arrived, the suspects shot at them but missed.
The herdsman managed to escape during this time. After hearing gunfire, Mohammed recognized one suspect and asked why they were doing this to him. He was then shot and lost consciousness.
Residents reported the incident to their community chief, who called the police. The body was moved to St Anne Catholic Hospital for an autopsy in Damongo.
Mohammed left behind twelve children and two wives.
There was tension at the police station later when family members demanded a refund of GHS6,000 paid for the autopsy. They argued that as Muslims, they did not need an autopsy but were forced to pay.
The police eventually refunded the GHS6,000 to Mohammed's family.
