Traders at the Adum Blue Light Arena have removed the fence set up by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA). This fence was meant to block off the affected market area. The traders wanted access to continue their trade.
On Thursday, they arrived to find roofing sheets blocking their way. These sheets were used to cordon off the market area. Despite a heavy military presence, the traders ignored the officers.
The market women, dressed in red, showed their anger. They believe there are attempts to take over their land.
Market queen mother Abena Nsowaa stated that traders will keep removing barricades. She expressed concern that if KMA manages reconstruction, they might not get stores.
A month ago, a fire devastated the Blue Light Arena and affected many traders. Despite warnings from KMA, traders returned to sell their goods.
Some have already set up tables for trading activities in the area. Meanwhile, developers are reconstructing one of the three-storey buildings destroyed by the fire, also ignoring KMA's warnings.
