Agotime-Kpetoe market women protest NDC’s failure to appoint female DCE

Market women in Agotime-Kpetoe, Volta Region, are frustrated. They are disappointed with the National Democratic Congress (NDC). The party did not appoint Madam Vicentia Sename Leyo as District Chief Executive (DCE).

The women see this as a missed chance for inclusive governance. They believe it affects gender equity and women's empowerment in the district.

Women in Agotime have significantly contributed to development. They have played roles in agriculture, trade, education, and community service. However, they feel sidelined in leadership positions.

They expected the NDC's recent appointments to show commitment to gender inclusivity. During a press conference on March 31, 2025, they expressed their views at the Agotime-Kpetoe Market.

The women argued that appointing Madam Leyo would signal support for gender equality. They described her as vibrant, educated, industrious, and hardworking. She has shown dedication during past elections.

They referenced the NDC’s 2024 manifesto on gender and inclusion. The women called for key policies like a 30% quota for women in political roles. They also want a Women’s Development Bank and initiatives for women in agriculture.

Additionally, they seek improvements to facilities like Kpetoe Market through the Market Enhancement Programme. A female DCE could address issues affecting marginalized groups.

These issues include inadequate healthcare and poor road infrastructure. Access to quality education and economic empowerment for women is also crucial.

The women lamented that their voices were ignored again. This deepens their sense of exclusion from governance.

Moving forward, they plan community dialogues and advocacy campaigns. They will petition for increased female representation in leadership roles.

They urged President John Dramani Mahama to reconsider the appointment process. Competent women like Madam Sename should be given opportunities to serve.

If she is not appointed DCE, they hope she can take another role advocating for women's empowerment.
