Residents of Akatakyieso in the Amansie Central District are protesting. They are against National Security's seizure of a private mining concession.
The demonstration is called "Yemmpene," meaning "We won't agree." It aims to highlight the alleged misuse of power against legal miners.
Protesters want the President to remove National Security personnel from the site. They argue that the mine operates legally.
Jonas Owusu, the demonstration leader, praised Michael Owusu, the mining firm's owner. He noted Mr. Owusu's contributions to community development.
"Mr. Owusu has improved our JHS block and built a police post," he said. He also mentioned support for the chief's compound and assistance for the elderly.
The community demands an immediate withdrawal of security personnel from the site. The Smart Mickey Mining site uses simple tools to excavate gold-containing rocks.
Sources confirm that the mining firm has all necessary permits and documents. Protesters warn that if security personnel are not removed within two weeks, tensions may escalate.
"We won't allow them to take away our source of income," they stated. They highlighted that the mining firm has created jobs and reduced crime in their area.
The demonstration drew young and old residents, along with traditional leaders. Many held placards supporting the concession owner, seen as a vital community member.
