Anlo Youth Council urges vigilance as gov’t commits to Sea defence and resettlement plans

The Anlo Youth Council (AYC) has called for urgent action. They want to protect coastal communities in the Volta Region. This comes as the government and partners show renewed commitment to sea defense and resettlement.

Godsway Hanyabui, Vice President of AYC, expressed cautious optimism. He emphasized the need for unity, vigilance, and community engagement.

“The people of Anlo have suffered for too long,” Mr. Hanyabui said. “Generations have watched their homes swallowed by the sea.” He urged all Anlo youth and affected communities to stay united and proactive.

This appeal follows a meeting with the Volta Regional Minister. The Agavedzi to Aflao Sea Defence Project is now included in Ghana’s 2025 National Budget.

Communities in Anloga, Ketu South, and Keta have faced severe tidal waves. They have lost homes, schools, farmland, and ancestral cemeteries. The AYC has been advocating for sustainable solutions to this crisis.

Including the Agavedzi to Aflao project in the budget is a major milestone. The project will focus on shoreline protection and land reclamation. Experts say this shift is essential for long-term coastal resilience.

The Volta Regional Minister announced that financial clearance is pending. A contractor will mobilize to the site soon.

Meanwhile, NADMO is coordinating temporary relief for displaced families. Tents and emergency supplies are being procured for those without shelter after recent tidal waves.

To address permanent housing needs, Ghana Gas is finalizing an agreement. This will support completing resettlement units already under construction.

An ongoing WACA Resilience Feasibility Study informs long-term coastal strategy. It includes sediment flow analysis and community consultations across Anlo State.

The study aims to develop effective solutions that avoid past mistakes.

“We are grateful to the Regional Minister and technical agencies,” Hanyabui stated. “But our work is not done.”

He urged everyone to remain vigilant and supportive of efforts to secure their coastline. “Together, we rise with the tide,” he added.

The AYC remains committed to holding authorities accountable while mobilizing local participation for lasting impact.
