Asante Mamponghene's burial rites attract thousands of mourners

The burial rites for Daasebre Osei Bonsu II have begun. Thousands are gathering in Asante Mampong to mourn.

The royal farewell will take place from June 6 to 9. It will conclude on Monday with the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, honoring the final rites.

These burial rites, called 'Doteyie,' involve mourning traditions. People wear black and red during this period. They participate in various cultural activities.

Traditional priests lead ancient rituals amid drumming and dancing. They honor the passing of the paramount chief.

Daasebre Osei Bonsu II was born Saint Oswald Gyimah-Kessie on December 31, 1939. He became the Asante Mamponghene on August 25, 1996. He was the 28th occupant of the Silver Stool and Krontihene of Asanteman.

He passed away in April 2025 at age 85.

During his reign, he resolved chieftaincy disputes in Mampong successfully. He played a key role in maintaining peace and promoting development in Asante Kingdom.

Daasebre was a strong advocate against illegal mining. He worked hard to prevent 'g'alamsey' from taking root in Asante Mampong.

As an academic, he served as Registrar at KNUST from 1991 until retirement in 2000. He dedicated 28 years to this role.
