Asunafo South DCE empowers persons with disabilities through Common Fund

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Asunafo South, Mr. Joseph Yinka, presented essential items to 21 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). This initiative aims to improve their livelihoods and promote self-reliance.

On Sunday, the items were distributed. They included 11 refrigerators, eight fufu pounding machines, a sewing machine, and a wheelchair. The goal is to equip beneficiaries with tools for financial and social independence.

Mr. Yinka stated that the Disability Common Fund aims to provide resources and opportunities for PWDs. It also supports educational and vocational training to enhance their skills.

He explained that the Disability Common Fund (DCF) is three percent of the District Assemblies Common Fund. This fund is a government initiative in Ghana designed to empower persons with disabilities.

The fund is managed by the Disability Fund Management Committee (DFMC) at the district level. They review and approve applications submitted by PWDs.

Mr. Yinka added that the fund provides financial assistance for business ventures and assistive devices. It also supports education, healthcare access, awareness creation, and capacity building for PWDs.

He assured everyone that the fund is used responsibly and transparently. Strong monitoring and evaluation mechanisms are in place to ensure effectiveness.

“Monitoring and evaluation are crucial for enhancing the fund’s impact,” he affirmed. However, he noted that disbursement occurs in batches due to limited resources.

He urged PWDs in the district to be patient as their applications are processed.

Kojo Kwarteng, a beneficiary, expressed gratitude on behalf of all recipients. He praised the district for following due process in distributing funds.

“We will use these items wisely to improve our living conditions,” he said. “We aim to become economically self-reliant.”

The event was attended by key stakeholders including Ahafo Regional Minister Charity Gardiner and Osahene Yaw Atakyi from Kukuom Traditional Council. Regional heads of departments and agencies were also present.
