Bono East drivers threaten tollboycott over alleged police extortion

Some taxi drivers in the Bono East Region have vowed not to pay road tolls if reintroduced unless police officers from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) are removed from road checkpoints.

Speaking on the Techiman-Kintampo highway, the drivers alleged that officers extort GH₵5 at each of the four checkpoints, making the absence of tollbooths a financial relief.

Finance Minister-designate Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, during his vetting, reiterated the NDC's commitment to reinstating tolls, a policy scrapped under the previous NPP government.

However, drivers argue that toll proceeds have not contributed to visible road improvements.

Meanwhile, hawkers near the Tanoboase tollbooth welcomed the decision, urging drivers to cooperate and allow passengers to support their trade.
