Driver of VVIP bus swept away by overflowing River Okye shares harrowing experience

Jonathan Kwateng drives the VVIP bus (registration number GT 8213-23). The bus was swept away by the overflowing River Okye at Assin Edubease. He shared his terrifying experience in an interview with Radio Fosu/Adom News.

Kwateng described the moment as feeling like “resurrecting from death.” Passengers, including a pregnant woman and children, screamed for help. He felt powerless to assist them.

The incident happened after heavy rains caused River Okye to flood its banks. Fortunately, the fire service intervened quickly. All 63 passengers were rescued without injury.

The passengers were traveling from Winneba to Sefwi Wiawso after a graduation ceremony at UEW’s main campus. They received another bus early this morning to continue their journey. A National Road Safety Authority towing vehicle will recover the submerged bus for repairs.

Central North MTTD Commander, ASP Wonder Lumor, praised the fire service and police. He acknowledged all stakeholders for their role in the successful rescue operation.
