The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has made a promise. He assured the Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (SD Dombo UBIDS) that the government will pay its debt to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
Iddrisu spoke during the inauguration of the university’s Governing Council in Accra. The council members took their Oath of Office and Oath of Secrecy. This ceremony marks a new chapter in the university's governance.
Mr. Iddrisu recognized the financial challenges facing the university. He highlighted the burden of ECG's legacy debt. The Ministry will collaborate with the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to clear this debt.
This will allow SD Dombo UBIDS to focus on academic priorities. The Minister noted that the university has not received significant infrastructure support. However, he announced that GETFund will provide seed funding this year.
This funding is part of President Mahama’s vision for institutional growth. Iddrisu urged the Governing Council to offer strategic direction and support. He assured them of continued government backing for ongoing infrastructure projects under GETFund.
Dr. Benjamin Kumbour chairs the newly inaugurated Governing Council. He committed to restoring and enhancing the university’s fortunes. Kumbour stressed community and private sector involvement in development efforts.
He stated, “We will explore private initiatives and engage local communities.” This aims to contribute to SD Dombo University’s growth.
In another announcement, Minister Iddrisu revealed plans for a new University of Agriculture and Life Sciences in Kintampo. This institution will primarily serve the Bono Region.
It aligns with Ghana’s national agricultural development strategy. Despite agriculture being vital for decades, it suffers from underinvestment and lack of modernization.
The proposed university aims to bridge this gap by training professionals. It will also conduct research to promote sustainable agricultural practices in Ghana.
