The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) in the Volta Region has destroyed counterfeit pharmaceutical products. These products were worth GH₵42 million.
The items included aphrodisiacs, post pills, body enhancers, antibiotics, and processed food. Most of the contraband was intercepted at the Ghana-Togo border in Akanu. Others were seized during routine market surveys in the Volta and Oti regions.
The products were shredded and disinfected at Jopong Group’s Medical Waste Treatment Facility. After that, they were disposed of at dumping sites for burning.
Gordon Akurugu is the Volta Regional Director of the FDA. He stated they used this facility to ensure proper disposal of counterfeit products.
He emphasized that pharmaceutical products should only be imported through airports or seaports. Anyone caught using land borders will face arrest and seizure of their items.
Akurugu noted that drugs from inland borders, especially from Nigeria, are not allowed. He advised people to buy pharmaceuticals only from approved sources like pharmacies and hospitals.
He warned consumers about counterfeit products like procold and Postino 2. These items can have serious health implications despite appearing effective.
Mr. Akurugu assured that his team would remain vigilant against smuggling activities. He also warned drivers not to assist in these illegal operations.
He urged other FDA regional offices to use medical treatment plants for disposing of pharmaceutical waste to protect the environment.
Rev Lawrence Senya is the Ho Municipal Environmental Health Officer. He explained that proper disposal methods safeguard public health.
Improperly disposed drugs can end up back in communities, posing risks.
Senya called for public cooperation to eliminate inappropriate sales of pharmaceuticals.
He encouraged people not to buy drugs sold on streets or in lorry parks as they likely haven't gone through proper channels.
