Fear grips residents of Akatakyieso after 'unauthorised' taskforce invaded mining firm, assaulted workers, stole gold bars

Residents of Akatakyieso in the Amansie Central District are scared. An unauthorized taskforce allegedly invaded the concession of Mickey Mining Company.

Reports say they assaulted workers and stole gold bars. A group of strong men claimed to be from National Security. They stormed the community and mining site on Tuesday, April 29. Several people were injured during the incident.

This has caused widespread fear among residents. The Chief of Akatakyieso, Nana Nuako, condemned the situation. He called it a very bad precedent and demanded immediate arrests.

"Mickey Mining Company is not involved in illegal mining," he stated. The company has a license and is recognized by the Minerals Commission.

The Chief believes such actions are not effective against illegal mining. "Attacking workers at legitimate firms creates confusion," he emphasized. It undermines efforts to end illegal mining.

Residents and traditional leaders are urging President John Mahama to act. They want an investigation by the Ashanti Regional Police Command. They seek protection for legitimate mining companies in their area.
