A fire outbreak has ravaged 12 acres of a 25-acre mango farm in Okwenya, a suburb of Somanya in the Yilo Krobo Municipality, causing losses exceeding GH₵100,000.

According to the Somanya Fire Service, they received a distress call from the farm owner at 11:20 AM last week.

Firefighters swiftly responded and managed to contain the blaze, preventing further destruction.

Mr. Abubakari Musah of the Fire Service revealed that the fire started when the farmer burned a snake near an area where pig waste mixed with sawdust.

Unaware of the risk, the fire smouldered and spread due to the dry harmattan conditions.

Fortunately, a piggery on the farm remained unaffected, and firefighters saved the remaining 13 acres.

Mr. Musah advised farmers to exercise caution with fire, especially in dry weather, and to create fire belts to prevent such incidents.
