The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) estimates it will cost GH₵28 million to fix and install streetlights in the city.
Many streets have been dark for years. This has raised safety and security concerns at night.
Poor lighting affects traffic flow. Motorists struggle on poorly-lit routes, facing security threats.
Mayor Richard Boadi shared the news on Luv FM. He said, "We have received bills for the needed streetlights. The amount is huge, over 28 million cedis."
The assembly has identified key areas needing urgent installations. They aim to reduce costs to 13 million cedis while seeking resources for other areas.
Mr. Boadi hopes to raise enough funds to start work soon.
He noted sensitive areas include ceremonial routes from Bantama to Prempeh College through Sofoline. The assembly is engaging streetlight companies about staggered payments for the 13 million cedis.
Meanwhile, the city also faces issues with defunct traffic lights. These contribute to heavy congestion and preventable accidents in the metropolis.
