Government to establish university at Kintampo

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, announced plans for a new public university. This university will focus on health, agriculture, and life sciences. It will be located in Kintampo, in the Bono East Region.

The new institution aims to serve the broader Bono Region. It will also support Ghana’s national agricultural development strategy.

Iddrisu made this announcement during the inauguration of the Governing Council of S.D. Dombo University in Wa. He stated that the Ministry is finalizing a bill for Parliament. This bill will provide the legal framework for establishing the University of Health, Agriculture and Life Sciences.

The university will focus on agricultural innovation and rural development. Its goal is to enhance food security and promote sustainable development in Ghana.

Iddrisu reiterated President Mahama's commitment to having a public university in each region. He said it is important for every region to host a higher education institution.

He mentioned that they are starting this process now. “We have begun somewhat in getting that done,” he stated.

Iddrisu plans to present the bill for the new university when Parliament reconvenes. He emphasized its importance for serving the Bono Region.

Additionally, he revealed plans to revert names of some public universities changed by the previous administration. This policy aims to restore historical identities and reaffirm foundational missions.

He addressed criticism regarding these name changes. “It’s not to say we do not appreciate past contributions,” he explained.

Iddrisu assured that he would table the bill promptly after Parliament returns from recess.
