IGP orders raid on illegal mining hub at Wassa Gyapa after JoyNews reports

The Inspector General of Police has ordered a major raid on illegal gold mining in Wassa Gyapa. This follows reports by JoyNews about the growing issue.

Since 2023, the Wassa communities of Gyapa, Dadieso, and Ntwentwena have seen increased illegal mining. Residents are digging large pits in homes and along roads.

The Ayamfuri-Diaso road is particularly affected. Large excavations have turned it into a “notorious illegal mining criminal zone,” according to police.

After a post by JoyNews’ Erastus Asare Donkor, IGP Mr. Tetteh Yohuno directed police to dismantle illegal mining operations. The focus was on the main Ayamfuri road.

The operation was led by Vitus Napen from the Asankragua Divisional Police Headquarters. C/Supt. William Jabialu also played a key role. They were supported by eight senior officers and ninety-two personnel.

Police targeted activities about 500 meters off the Kumasi-Tarkwa highway. Officers stormed Wassa Gyapa and arrested 13 suspects involved in illegal mining.

The arrested individuals include Nana Ampadu, 58; Stephen Tetteh, 18; Yaw Dalame, 23; Samuel Amoah, 20; Kwame Oppong, 19; and Francis Oduom, 18.

Others arrested are Owusu Asare, 36; Atta Kwame, 18; Apiyanga Emmanuel, 28; Kojo Montanakito, 23; Maxwell Owusu, 19; Obofo Vincent, 22; and Soogal Fataw, 19.

In addition to arrests, over 120 chanfang machines used for illegal mining were disabled. Six motorbikes were also confiscated during the operation.

The suspects will appear before the Tarkwa Circuit Court on May 20, 2025. The seized motorbikes will be presented as evidence in court.

Police state that this operation will continue until illegal mining is eradicated from the area. The five-hour operation concluded at 3:30 p.m., without any incidents reported.
