The town of Amanokrom in the Akuapem North Constituency hosted the Ofie Market on Saturday, March 29. This local trade fair connects farmers directly with consumers.
The initiative was led by Member of Parliament Sammi Awuku. It received massive support from farmers, traders, and residents.
The market had a great turnout. Fresh produce, grains, vegetables, and other goods sold out quickly. Many farmers and traders saw this as a breakthrough after struggling for months.
One trader said, “I haven’t sold this much in a long time.” Another added, “Thank you, Sammi Awuku! Please make this a regular event.”
A local farmer expressed relief at the demand. He said they often face post-harvest losses due to limited buyers. “My produce was finished before we could even offload,” he noted.
Consumers were happy with the quality and prices of goods. A shopper from Accra said, “This is a brilliant initiative. I got everything I planned for my family.”
Hon. Sammi Awuku spoke to journalists about his inspiration for the market. He noticed many farmers struggled with post-harvest losses during his campaign last year.
“This Ofie Market is my response to that need,” he explained. He hopes it encourages farmers to increase their yields. The market will be held on the last Saturday of every month.
The next Ofie Market is scheduled for April 26, 2025.
Traditional leaders also supported the initiative. The Chief of Amanokrom, Nana Osim Kwatia II, praised the MP’s vision.
“This is a great initiative,” he stated. He noted it has boosted economic activity in Amanokrom and helped small businesses thrive.
With its successful debut, the Ofie Market aims to empower agribusiness in Akuapem North. Traders and residents are excited for the next edition.
