Mpohor and Adum Banso in the Western Region welcome 20 Blue Water Guards

On Monday, May 19, the Minerals Commission deployed 20 Blue Water Guards. They will work in the Mpohor and Adum Banso communities. This is part of efforts to combat illegal mining in Ghana.

Osabarima Kwaw Entsie II welcomed the delegation from the Minerals Commission. He stressed the need to protect the health of the Blue Water Guards. Tap water has become undrinkable due to river pollution. This pollution has caused outbreaks of waterborne diseases.

The Omanhene highlighted how community leaders can help environmental initiatives succeed. He also called for preventing corruption among the Blue Water Guards.

Mr. Francis Annobil Jr., Western Regional Manager of the Minerals Commission, spoke about mining taxes. He said all taxes must go directly to the government through the Commission. Unauthorized fees could harm this initiative's success and local development.

Mr. Steven Agbo, a Social Scientist at the Minerals Commission, emphasized best mining practices. He noted that current activities often violate regulations, worsening environmental issues. Mr. Agbo assured support for miners to adopt sustainable practices that benefit communities.

Sophia Aubynn, District Chief Executive, highlighted the need to stop environmental degradation. She warned that unregulated mining could cause house collapses and flooding risks.

Her comments stressed both physical dangers and community cooperation's importance against illegal mining.

Henry Kofi Bentil, MP for the area, praised efforts to restore water bodies and forests. He urged responsible mining practices and youth involvement in the Blue Water Initiative.

ASP William Abotsi, Mpohor District Police Commander, promised support for this initiative. He advised Guards to stay dedicated but avoid confrontations with miners.

He also urged community members not to abuse or assault personnel during operations. The police's involvement is crucial for enforcing regulations and protecting communities.

The deployment of Blue Water Guards marks progress in addressing challenges from illegal mining. Support from leaders and law enforcement highlights collaboration's importance.

By maintaining integrity and fostering partnerships, these Guards can protect water resources effectively.
