The Aflao Zongo Youth Caucus in Ketu South Municipality has launched a campaign. This initiative aims to address substance abuse and drug trafficking.
The campaign is timely as the world prepares for the International Day Against Drug Abuse on June 26. The theme this year is “Advocate for Effective Policies.”
Called “Zongos Against Drugs,” the initiative targets substance abuse in Zongo communities. It also seeks to engage parents and key stakeholders, especially regarding Red, a locally abused substance.
The Youth Caucus collaborates with the Ghana Police Service in Aflao. They are using a multifaceted approach that includes religious leaders and local authorities.
After meeting with male leaders and Chief Imams, they now focus on women. They recognize mothers' vital role in shaping community responses.
Abbas Mohammad, leader of the Caucus, highlighted women's importance in this effort. He stated, “We cannot leave them out.”
Assistant Superintendent of Police Doreen Incoom praised the youth's initiative. She urged women to watch for signs of drug use among their children.
She said, “Together, we can secure a bright future for our children.” Community members should report suspicious ghettos for quick action.
Imam Sariki Ahmed Ismail also supported the youth's efforts. He encouraged residents to report anyone establishing ghettos in Zongo communities.
This campaign follows a police operation where 26 individuals were arrested for illegal drug dealing. Sixteen of those arrested are now in police custody and will appear in court on June 3, 2025.
Participants pledged to work with all relevant stakeholders, especially the police. Their goal is to combat the growing issue of drug abuse in the region.
