The District Chief Executive (DCE) for North Tongu, Victoria Amefadzi Yawa Doe, is monitoring sand-winning activities. She aims to assess operations in the district.
On Friday morning, she visited several sites in Battor. Concerns have been raised about irresponsible sand-winning practices there.
The DCE was accompanied by the District Director and a security team. This team included officers from the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana National Fire Service. Their goal is to ensure safe and responsible sand-winning operations.
After the inspection, Victoria Yawa Doe expressed serious concerns. She noted alarming environmental degradation at some sites. If unchecked, this could lead to erosion, flooding, and loss of farmland. These issues are vital to local residents' livelihoods.
“The District Assembly does not oppose sand winning,” the DCE clarified. “When done responsibly, it supports construction and development.” However, she cannot tolerate practices that threaten lives and property.
She stressed that operators must follow regulations and best practices. This will help minimize environmental harm. The Assembly wants a business-friendly environment but prioritizes citizen safety.
During her tour, the DCE spoke with several sand winners. She educated them on securing permits and responsible mining practices. She encouraged collaboration with the Assembly and environmental authorities.
To ensure compliance, Yawa Doe announced routine monitoring across all sand-winning communities in North Tongu. Defaulters will face legal consequences.
This tour is part of a broader initiative by the North Tongu District Assembly. They aim to promote environmental conservation while supporting economic development.
Poorly regulated sand winning can devastate the environment. It can destroy vegetation, contaminate water bodies, and disrupt ecosystems.
Authorities nationwide are increasing enforcement efforts for regulation. The North Tongu District Assembly aims to lead in responsible environmental stewardship.
