Nyinahin shooting: MP commiserates with bereaved family, urges calm

Seth Osei Akoto, the Member of Parliament for Atwima Mponua, visited a bereaved family in Nyinahin. A young man was shot dead by a soldier there. Three others were injured during the incident.

Mr. Akoto traveled to the region after hearing about the shooting. He intended to brief the Ashanti Regional Minister but met with the Deputy Regional Coordinating Director instead.

On JoyFM Midday, he shared details of his visit. He expressed condolences to the deceased's wife and family. He assured them of his support during this difficult time.

“The family is very calm,” Mr. Akoto said. “I’ve spoken with many locals and am waiting for the Chief of Nyinahin.” He also plans to meet with the Regional Police Commander for a press statement.

Tensions are rising in Nyinahin following the fatal shooting on April 24, 2025. The incident occurred during a funeral procession around 11:00 a.m. A group was heading to bury a friend along the Kumasi–Bibiani Highway.

The Ashanti Regional Police reported that soldiers stopped a military-clad mourner during the procession. Eyewitnesses say soldiers tried to remove his camouflage attire forcibly. A confrontation led to one soldier allegedly shooting him in the head, killing him instantly.

Mr. Akoto is in contact with local police and plans to work with Military Command. He aims to ensure accountability for those involved in this tragic event.
