One arrested after discovery of illegal mining site in Aowin Nkwanta

One person is in police custody tonight. This follows the discovery of an illegal mining site at Aowin Nkwanta in the Western North Region.

The suspect was arrested today by a special anti-galamsey police team. They conducted a targeted operation in Nkrankrom village.

The police intercepted a pickup truck with no registration number. They questioned the driver, who could not explain his presence in the forest.

After intense questioning, he led police to a large illegal mining site. This site is located deep within the forest at Aowin Nkwanta, where he admitted to working.

Police have secured the site and are investigating further. More searches will occur in the coming days. Efforts are underway to retrieve excavators and other hidden mining equipment.

This operation is part of nationwide efforts against illegal mining. The goal is to protect Ghana’s natural environment.
