Police at the Tadzewu-Metsrikasa Barrier in Ketu North Municipality intercepted a large shipment of ammunition. This occurred on Friday, April 18, 2025, around 3:30 AM. The ammunition was found on a passenger bus traveling from Accra to Benin.
During a routine inspection, officers searched a Hyundai bus with registration number GR 8246-Q. They discovered 60 cartons of AAA cartridges, totaling 15,000 rounds. Additionally, they found 72 cartons of BB cartridges, amounting to 18,000 rounds. The ammunition was hidden under luggage and wrapped in sacks.
The Volta Regional Police Public Affairs Unit issued an official statement about the incident. It was signed by DSP Felix Danku and dated April 19, 2025.
The driver, Abasou Fousseni (45), and co-driver Salisu Jalilu (38) were arrested for questioning. Both men denied knowing about the concealed ammunition. Preliminary investigations suggest that Salisu Jalilu loaded the illegal items into the bus.
The driver was granted bail to continue the journey with passengers safely. However, the co-driver remains in custody for further investigation. He is expected to appear in court on Tuesday, April 22, 2025.
The statement emphasized the Ghana Police Service's commitment to fighting transnational crimes that threaten peace in the ECOWAS region. Investigations are ongoing to find out where the ammunition came from and who it was meant for.
