Police intercept nearly 6k parcels of suspected Indian hemp on Volta Lake; 3 arrested

The Eastern North Regional Police Command has arrested three people. They are linked to transporting a large shipment of suspected Indian hemp across Volta Lake.

The suspects are Abraham Agonu, Michael Akuaku, and Confidence Amenuveve. They were caught on Tuesday, May 28, 2025, at Asuboni near Kwahu Adawso in the Eastern Region. The police intercepted them while they were allegedly ferrying the drugs.

During the operation, police recovered 5,950 parcels of compressed and non-compressed leaves. These items are believed to be Indian hemp. The drugs were hidden in 85 maxi sacks on a large engine boat.

This arrest is part of a special intelligence-led operation by regional police. Their goal is to disrupt drug trafficking through the Volta Lake route.

Authorities also seized a pump-action shotgun and two outboard motors. They confiscated the engine-powered vessel used for smuggling as well.

Preliminary investigations suggest this operation may be part of a larger trafficking network. A man named Felix is believed to lead this network. He reportedly boarded another boat heading toward Akate to avoid capture.

Police have launched a manhunt for Felix and other accomplices involved in this illegal operation. The suspects are currently in custody and assisting with investigations.

The police stated that this effort is part of ongoing actions against illegal drug trafficking along Ghana’s inland waterways.
