Yam prices surge at Dambai market as season unfolds

Dambai Market in the Krachi East Municipality is seeing rising yam prices.

As the harvesting season begins, prices have surged significantly.

A bundle of 100 tubers now costs between 5,000 and 7,000 cedis. This is up from an average of 3,000 cedis. The price varies based on quality and size.

Both buyers and sellers are struggling with these rising costs. Farmers attribute the increase to high agro-chemical prices and growing demand.

Buyers are frustrated by the soaring prices and spoilage issues. They face problems with rotten tubers due to extreme weather conditions.

Lack of storage facilities at the market worsens this situation. Yams may look good outside but can be rotten inside when cut open.

This affects buyers' finances negatively. They are urging the government to regulate agro-chemical use for better yam production.

Wisdom Awuranyi, P.R.O. of the Yam Buyers and Sellers Association, calls for a modern market facility. He believes improved infrastructure will help address current challenges.

With better practices, Dambai market can thrive and keep yams accessible for everyone.

“We need organized storage facilities and a hygienic trading environment,” he stated.

Awuranyi emphasized that a modern facility would reduce spoilage and ensure quality products for buyers.

He also urged the government to enhance education on agro-chemicals for farmers. This would help promote competitive yam production with other countries.
