"This is not a witch-hunt" – Keta MCE urges calm as probe into reclaimed lands begins

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Keta, Wisdom Bondzie Seade, is urging calm. A high-level investigation has started into the sale and encroachment of Keta’s reclaimed lands.

Mr. Seade spoke to the media after inaugurating a seven-member committee. This committee will investigate the land disputes in Keta. He emphasized that their work is not a witch-hunt.

The investigation aims to protect Keta’s remaining settlement lands. It also seeks to restore trust in the municipality’s land administration.

“This is not a witch-hunt,” Mr. Seade stated clearly.

He added, “We need to understand what happened to our reclaimed lands.” He urged anyone who bought or acquired land to bring their documents.

Keta’s reclaimed lands were meant for families displaced by tidal waves. Over time, they have become contentious due to unregulated sales and unauthorized constructions. Some residents suspect powerful individuals are involved in land-grabbing.

Recently, there has been a surge in building developments without legal authorization. This has alarmed stakeholders and residents who feel cheated.

Mr. Seade noted that new structures are undermining the government’s resettlement initiative. “We cannot look on while people lose their only source of hope,” he said.

The seven-member committee was inaugurated by Volta Regional Minister James Gunu. Dr. Joe Attipoe, an expert in land management, chairs the committee.

Their mandate includes probing activities related to land acquisitions on reclaimed lands. They are expected to submit their report within one month.

Dr. Attipoe assured Keta's residents that the committee would meet expectations and uphold public trust. “We are not here to target anyone,” he said.

“Our mission is to establish facts and ensure fairness,” he added.

Minister Gunu expressed concern over discrepancies between official layouts and current developments on the ground. He stressed responsible land use and transparency as vital issues.

He noted that these reclaimed lands aim to modernize Keta and provide relief for those displaced by climate disasters.

“We’ll act on the report without fear or favor,” Mr. Gunu declared firmly.

“The people of Keta deserve order, transparency, and development.” He believes this committee will help realign their vision for the area.

The Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC) promises full implementation of the committee’s recommendations.

Residents who acquired land through any means are encouraged to come forward with documents. Their cooperation will help ensure a smooth and fair investigation process.
