Reducing ministries a step forward, but should be enshrined in law – Prof. Asare

Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare has applauded President John Mahama's decision to reduce the number of ministries from 30 to 23, calling it a positive move toward efficient governance.

While supportive, he expressed a preference for enshrining the change through legislation rather than an executive instrument, ensuring its permanence and preventing easy reversal by future administrations.

The restructuring, announced on January 11, includes significant changes: splitting the Ministry of Youth and Sports into the Ministry of Sports and the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment, merging Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs with Local Government, renaming the Trade Ministry as the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry, and rebranding the Energy Ministry as the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition.

Prof. Asare commended the focus on sustainability and inclusivity but stressed the need for legislative backing to solidify these reforms.
