The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has paid former Black Stars coach C.K. Akonnor. He received a total of $120,000 in outstanding salary arrears.
Akonnor managed the national team from January 2020 to September 2021. He had been waiting for this payment for several months after his dismissal. The arrears were unpaid salaries from his time as coach.
His appointment followed Kwesi Appiah's departure during a critical period for Ghanaian football. Akonnor faced challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic and a busy international schedule. His tenure ended after disappointing results in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
This payment resolves ongoing concerns about local coaches' treatment and contractual obligations. A source at the Ministry confirmed that Akonnor's assistant, David Duncan, also received $40,000 in unpaid wages. This shows the government's commitment to settling debts owed to coaches and staff.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has not yet commented on this payment. However, many in the football community are likely to welcome this development. They have long advocated for fairness and accountability in sports administration.
