The Ghana Football Association (GFA) and KGL Foundation launched the 5th edition of the KGL Foundation Inter-Regional U17 Colts Championship on May 20, 2025.
The ceremony took place at KGL House in Labone, Accra. It shows the GFA's commitment to grassroots football talent. Many GFA officials and KGL Foundation executives attended the event.
GFA President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku thanked the KGL Foundation for supporting youth football development. He said, "For five consecutive years, the KGL Foundation has supported youth football in Ghana." He praised their sponsorship for fueling this tournament and helping young dreams come true.
President Simeon-Okraku noted that the Foundation’s support is more than financial. He stated, "Your investment shows belief in Ghana’s future." The KGL Foundation has helped re-engineer Colts football and improve talent identification across the country.
Since its start in 2021, the Championship has impacted Ghanaian youth football significantly. “Several current national U-17 players were discovered through this competition,” he added. He highlighted that past participants are now thriving at national and club levels.
Looking ahead, President Simeon-Okraku shared GFA’s long-term vision under the Ghana Football DNA initiative. “We will invest in systems that allow talent to grow,” he said. He also thanked media members for promoting the Championship's impact.
KGL Foundation Chief Executive Elliot Dadey spoke on behalf of the title sponsor. He emphasized their mission to transform lives through sports since 2021. “We've invested in kits, equipment, training, and a belief system,” Dadey stated.
He described the project as a movement reflecting Ghanaian integrity and determination globally. “By investing in these young players, we’re building a stronger Ghana for generations,” he added.
This year, each regional team will receive fifty footballs, cones, bibs, and match jerseys from KGL Foundation. Young referees will officiate to reinforce developmental goals of the Championship.
Initiated in 2021, this competition drives regional cohesion and player development. The Ashanti Region won its first title in 2023 while Western Region is defending champion after defeating Eastern Region 2-1 last year.
The 2025 edition will keep its format with teams from all ten regions selected from local colts competitions. Attendees included Executive Council members Samuel Aboabire and Nana Sarfo Oduro among others.
As this edition begins in July, expectations are high for it to spotlight emerging Ghanaian football talent once again.
