Asante Kotoko has marked the 24th anniversary of the May 9 disaster. They issued a solemn message calling for an end to violence at matches.
Twenty-four years ago, 126 people died at the Accra Sports Stadium. This tragedy occurred during a game between Kotoko and Hearts of Oak. It remains the biggest football disaster in Ghana and Africa.
In remembrance, Kotoko posted: "24 years ago today, a thick dark cloud engulfed our country. This was not from flames but from losing 126 innocent lives in a stadium disaster. We mourn our fallen sons and daughters today. We will forever stand against any form of violence at our match venues."
Kotoko has taken a strong stance against hooliganism. Earlier this year, they lost a fan after their game against Nsoatreman FC.
Hearts of Oak also shared their thoughts on social media. They wrote: "Rivals on the pitch, united in grief. Today, we pause to honour those we lost on that tragic day. Gone but never forgotten." They encouraged fans to drop a heart if they remember the victims.
