Basake Holy Stars are demanding all three points from their match against Nations FC. The Ghana Premier League clash was abandoned under controversial circumstances over the weekend.
The game was expected to be competitive. It stopped in the second half when Nations FC players walked off the pitch. They protested a second penalty awarded to Basake Holy Stars.
Eyewitnesses and local officials reported heated protests from Nations FC's bench and players. This led to a long delay and eventual abandonment of the match. At that point, Basake Holy Stars were leading 1-0, thanks to a penalty scored in the 32nd minute.
In a formal petition to the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Basake Holy Stars argue that Nations FC forfeited the match by refusing to continue. They believe they should be awarded all three points according to competition rules.
A Holy Stars official stated, “We were in full control of the game. The laws are clear on abandonment caused by one team’s refusal.” They emphasized that rules must be applied fairly.
The match took place at AAK II Sports Arena in Ampain. Tensions had already been high before the second penalty call, which Nations FC found contentious. Earlier parts of the match featured rough tackles and fan unrest, showing a lack of control from officials.
Security personnel were deployed to maintain order in the stands. After Nations FC's walk-off, officials declared the game abandoned.
The GFA has confirmed an investigation into this incident is underway. This includes examining both teams' conduct, match officials' actions, and crowd behavior at the venue.
Nations FC is among league title contenders while Basake Holy Stars aim to climb higher in standings. The outcome could significantly impact both clubs.
Both teams await the GFA’s decision soon. Possible consequences include awarded points, fines, or disciplinary actions based on findings.
