Veteran Ghanaian football coach Bashir Hayford has expressed concern. He believes the mystique of today's professional footballers is fading in the Ghana Premier League.
Hayford thinks players' visibility off the pitch has reduced admiration from fans. In an interview with Oyerepa FM, he compared today’s players to those of the past.
In earlier times, fans only saw players on match days at the stadium. This created a sense of allure and respect among supporters.
“Today, players are everywhere: ghettos, drinking spots, and streets,” Hayford said. “It’s made them too common in the eyes of supporters.”
He feels this constant exposure has weakened players' special status in the community.
Meanwhile, Heart of Lions are still in contention for the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League title. The Kpando-based club is currently third on the league table with 53 points. They are just one point behind league leaders Nations FC.
Heart of Lions will aim to keep their title hopes alive next weekend. They will face Basake Holy Stars in their Matchday 31 fixture.
