CLUB STATEMENT: Hearts of Oak marks 24th May 9 Stadium Disaster anniversary

On May 9, 2025, Accra Hearts of Oak released a statement. This marked the 24th anniversary of the May 9th Stadium Disaster. The disaster occurred on May 9, 2001, during a league match. It was between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko.

The statement emphasizes the club's commitment to safety. They aim to prevent similar tragedies in the future. The club will promote safer practices and educate fans about responsible behavior.

In 2001, 127 football fans lost their lives during the match. This event is significant in Ghanaian football history. It highlights the need for better safety measures and crowd management.

Asante Kotoko also remembered this tragic day on social media. They wrote: "24 years ago today, a thick dark cloud engulfed our country." They mourned the loss of 126 innocent lives in the disaster. The club vowed to stand against violence at match venues.

Earlier this year, Asante Kotoko lost a dedicated supporter during a league match against Nsoatreman FC.
